Fraunhofer Academy - Cybersecurity Training Lab

Your partner for cyber security in Saxony, Germany and the world.

Welcome to the Cybersecurity Training Lab at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences!

The Cybersecurity Training Lab connects the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE) in Bonn and Mittweida University of Applied Sciences.

Under the expert guidance of Professor Dr. Dirk Labudde the learning lab offers training and practical training for the education and further training of employees in companies, authorities and organizations. It designs innovative continuing education programs that promote the transfer of research and teaching from the courses. General and Digital Forensic Science and Cybercrime/Cybersecurity on new investigation and defense strategies in the field of cybercrime and cybersecurity and thus ensure state-of-the-art training.

All training and courses are tailored to the individual needs of the respective institution in order to ensure maximum learning success and develop practical solutions. At the same time, contract research is an important part of the Learning Lab's remit.

The following courses are offered by the Cyber Security Learning Lab:

Security Awareness – Creating awareness, gaining security

We take you on a journey into the world of social engineering. Immerse yourself and learn how a social engineer works, how it works and the methods of attack. You will acquire knowledge about the various attack patterns, how they work and the background to them, so that you can protect yourself more effectively against them. Learn the most important skills for identifying cyber attacks and reacting appropriately. With our individually created phishing emails, your organization can be tested for reaction and attack potential. The combination of practice and theory ensures ideal learning success. Do you want to train your employees directly during onboarding? No problem! We provide you with our online platform with an e-learning module so that you are on the safe side right from the start!

Digital forensics for internal investigations

In the course of digitalization, cyber attacks on companies are increasing exponentially. The perpetrators are hackers and insiders from within the organization, making the forensic investigation of an information security incident important. In many cases, IT departments lack the know-how to conduct forensic investigations. In this seminar, you will learn to understand and apply suitable IT forensics methods for data carriers and memory.

Cyber Crisis Management – Theory and practice

Preventive measures to avoid cyber attacks are essential. However, you should also be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Be prepared for cyber crises! Because in the event of an emergency, the right response from key people in the company is crucial. In our seminar, in addition to the theoretical basics of crisis management, you will also experience a complex live crisis simulation. During the live simulation, you will have to deal with a variety of cyber attacks, e.g. a social media shitstorm triggered by hackers or a DDoS attack.

Incident expert

Due to the strong dependence on functioning information technology, it is essential to react appropriately to IT security incidents and thus reduce the extent of damage to a minimum. In particular, small and medium-sized enterprises and regional authorities should be enabled to resolve IT security incidents quickly and effectively. This requires trained experts who can also provide on-site support if required.

Open Source Intelligence for public authorities

Researching digital traces and evidence in connection with a possible crime is now a central part of casework. This can be supported and completed with the help of OSINT measures. Analysts and investigators can access various websites and tools. Due to the constantly changing framework conditions for obtaining information, users must be able to adapt and solve problems that arise independently.

Car Forensics – Analysis of networked systems

Modern vehicles are storing more and more data. This data is important for law enforcement and provides a gateway for manipulation. This seminar shows you which data is stored in which control units and how it can be read out. Various types of data acquisition are presented. There is much more data stored in a vehicle than a simple workshop tester would suggest. Learn how to detect manipulations in the vehicle and uncover typical traces in the vehicle.

For students

The Cybersecurity Training offers students the opportunity to internships and final theses to research new strategies and work together to strengthen cyber security. The choice of topics is characterized by practical application and provides all students with exciting and relevant research topics. The current focus is on the Internet of Things and IT security on a technical and human level.
